A raft could be constructed fairly quickly from the plentiful papyrus reeds found along the Nile River. However, the reeds tended to become soggy, requiring repair or replacement. Wooden planks and gourds were added to increase the buoyancy of the raft, and these could be reused when the reeds became waterlogged.
