Ria de Aveiro, Portuguese Republic
Two men used this large flat bottom boat to gather kelp and seaweed from Aveiro lagoon. The kelp was not for consumption, but was highly valued as a fertilizer on farms in Portugal’s interior. The shift from natural to chemical fertilizers has meant the decline of these uniquely shaped and decorated craft.
