Double Outrigger Canoe (Ngalawa),

United Republic of Tanzania

Fishing is an important source of dietary protein and employment for Tanzanians. Some of the fish caught using canoes like this one are sold in local markets. Others such as shrimp are a major export.

The same outriggers that effectively extend the fishing range of the canoe also limit it. Double outrigger canoes can be unmanageable in heavy seas. As a result, many areas along coastal Tanzania are in danger of being over-fished because the canoes continue to work the same areas.
